A Bit About Berman's...

Shop__png.png

Some History (if you like that kind of stuff):

Berman's Wine and Spirits was incorporated in 1909 (yes, you read that correctly). We're located 12 miles NW of Boston and 4 miles from Cambridge in historic Lexington. The business began over a hundred years ago when Joel Berman's grandfather drove a horse drawn wagon up and down Massachusetts Avenue, selling meat door to door. The wagon eventually became a storefront, then a full grocery/dry goods business and finally, after prohibition, a licensed liquor store.

Joel Berman relates, "The town fathers came to my grandfather and offered him the first available liquor license in town due to his kind consideration of, and generosity to, those who didn't have enough money to pay him during the depression."

In 1959, Berman's moved diagonally across the street to a larger location on Massachusetts Avenue. This is where the shop currently resides. Joel Berman began working at Berman's in 1962 and through decades of hard work, passion, and love, built Berman's into the space that we all love today. By studying, tasting extensively and traveling to European vineyards, Joel establishing contacts with both Italian and French grower/winemakers, increasing his wine knowledge and enhancing his reputation both at home and abroad. He studied French, then Italian, and speaks both languages fluently, which is a tremendous aid in ferreting out excellent albeit obscure wines. Joel bought out his uncle's interest in the business in 1972.

In 2009, Joel needed a little help around the shop. He didn't know quite what he was looking for but he took a chance on a young kid named Alex Bluhm who was just hoping to learn more about wine and get a "foot in the door" of the wine industry. Alex had a passion for wine, intelligence, and an impressive work ethic but he lacked experience in a retail environment. Little did Joel know that Alex would freaking LOVE it! Alex did a little bit of everything at the shop and did it with a smile. With a lot of mentoring from Joel, he eventually worked his way up to Wine Director and General Manager and has been running the shop since 2012.

The shop was owned solely by Joel Berman from 1972 until August of 2024 (what a run!). At that time, Joel felt it was time to step away. Desiring to keep this important small business in the community and to keep the Berman's legacy of quality and service intact, Joel sold his interests to Alex. He knew Alex loved the business, loved the community, and loved wine and knew he had found the right steward to move Berman's into the future. He was the right man for the job.

Berman's is especially noted for carrying highly regarded, limited production wines from around the world, in addition to most popular favorites. The bulk of our producers are artisanal, family-owned and operated wineries, many of whom grow organically or biodynamically. Alex and his passionate team carefully source and select wines based on decades of tasting experience and a hands-on approach to learning the palates of their customers. By directly importing many of our featured wines, excellent price to quality ratios are maintained. The always changing portfolio at Berman's definitely represents a passionate old-world feel, but continues to explore all regions where wine is produced.

The Berman's email newsletter highlights many of the exceptional values and discoveries available at the shop with an analysis of trends, vintages and specific regions. In every blast, our team identifies best buys from select growers with in-depth analysis and tasting notes. The focus covers wines from all over the globe and allows you to learn about wine from the classics all the way to the newest styles/producers around. Our team's passion for wine is evident in all of our emails but they are not condescending or pedantic, instead they are educational and insightful.

Our team of experienced wine professionals pride themselves on assisting individual customer choices, for intimate dinner parties, larger affairs, or wines to cellar. Special order wines not stocked are gladly researched.

Alex Bluhm
Owner and Wine Director

Alex fell in love with wine when he was too young to "legally" enjoy it. He loved the smells, he loved the art of the labels, he loved the maps, and he loved the way everyone seemed happy when they were drinking wine together at a great meal. He even convinced his high school to allow him to leave school in the middle of the school day to be an "intern" at a winery in Holliston, MA. He caught the wine bug.

Alex decided to see how far he could take this wine thing and ended up graduating from Cornell University with a degree in Enology and Viticulture, including a semester abroad with the world-renowned University of Adelaide Wine Program. Alex worked a few odd jobs in the wine industry before joining the team at Berman’s Wine and Spirits. He immediately meshed with Joel’s leadership and has brought an exciting energy to the Berman’s wine program. His degree, hands-on winery experience, and trips to producers in Europe have helped him develop an in-depth knowledge of the entire winemaking process, learning how everything from farming techniques to fermentation temperature can affect the quality of a finished wine. Using his knowledge of regions and varietals, Alex specializes in sourcing wines that are both delicious and unexpected from obscure winemakers all around the world - always making sure that the value of price to quality is maintained. Alex is also a graduate of the WSET Advanced Certificate program. He believes there is at least one wine for every person and every occassion and prides himself on learning customers palates and preferences.

Alex and his amazing wife/ride-or-die, Molly, live in Somerville, MA. They are constantly entertained and exhausted by their two beautiful children, Milo and Lenni, and their neurotic and loving rescue dog, Norm.

Ryan Spencer
Wine Buyer & Manager

Formerly a janitor at MIT, Ryan Spencer has a gift for math and chemistry that can take him light-years beyond his blue-collar roots, but he has never realized his full potential. Born and raised in South Boston, he could never imagine leaving his childhood neighborhood, his construction job, or his lifelong best friend. To complicate matters, several strangers enter the equation: a brilliant math professor who discovers, even envies, Ryan's gifts, an empathetic shrink who identifies with Ryan’s humble roots and unbridled brilliance, and a beautiful, gifted, pre-med student who shows him, for the first time in his life, the possibility of love. Now Ryan works at Berman’s and drinks French wines.

In all seriousness, Ryan has a hell of a palate and works hard to absorb any wine information that you can throw at him. You see him hustling around the shop in a moe sweatshirt or face deep in a wine book or article. He is also our resident fantasy football expert and can help with setting lineups or analyzing how much faab to drop on random players. Ryan lives in Somerville with his wife/partner Kellie.

Adam Green
Shop Manager & Wine Specialist

Adam is the kindest and most coinscientious member of our team. And while he humbly downplays his wine knowledge, he'll talk obscure grape varieties with the best of them. Adam has worked at Berman's since 2004 and we were thrilled when he joined us full-time in September 2018. He graduated from Connecticut College a very long time ago (his words) with a degree in History, and now lives in Arlington.

If Adam is not at Berman's, you'll likely find him perusing the shelves at a book store. His interests include national politics, British tv mystery series, baseball, some science fiction, and of course, history. If you have a question about Presidential history or need a "phone a friend" when you're at trivia, Adam is your guy. It's shocking how much knowledge he has of this stuff. No joke, try and stump him. Adam is a bundle of energy and a fount of knowledge. His work ethic, dependability, and honesty are critical to our success and he is deeply appreciated.

If something needs to be done, Paul sees it and does it. He also knows a ton about Berman's and, well... everything. When you work with Paul you feel spoiled to be around such a kind and caring teammate. Paul "retired" after working at Harvard for over 46 years and now he spends his retirement with us. Joel Berman
The "Godfather"

Joel began working at Berman’s in 1962 under his father and uncle and shortly after starting in the business his passion for fine wine was born. Joel intensely studied and tasted wines from all over the world which brought him to some of the finest wineries across Europe on his quest for wine knowledge. After learning to speak French and Italian fluently, he built relationships with top French and Italian winemakers while traveling and now has a network all over Europe from which we still source many of our wines.
